Did you know that a leaky bathroom faucet can waste more than 3,000 gallons of water in a year? Help conserve this natural resource. Invest in water-efficient bathroom faucets to reduce unnecessary water usage and decrease your household’s utility bill.

The good news is that it’s now easy to identify water-saving faucets—look for the WaterSense® label. WaterSense® labeled bathroom taps use a maximum of 1.5 gallons per minute, helping you save at least 30% less water.

Let’s delve deeper into what WaterSense® is, its role in reducing water consumption, and other benefits of installing water-efficient faucets!

More About WaterSense

WaterSense® is a program sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), designed to protect our nation’s future water supplies through water-efficient products and practices.

As a voluntary partnership program, WaterSense® works with manufacturers, retailers and distributors, local and state governments, irrigation professionals, home builders, and more to encourage the adoption of water-efficient behaviors and quality products across the United States.

In addition to promoting the value of water efficiency, the WaterSense® partnership also helps in the following:

  • providing consumers with easy and identifiable ways to conserve water
  • decreasing water use and reducing strain on water resources and infrastructure
  • driving innovation in manufacturing and encouraging support for more sustainable jobs

What the WaterSense® Label Means

The WaterSense® label denotes high water efficiency and performance. All bathroom fixtures (i.e., faucets) with the mark have been certified by an EPA-licensed certifying body or EPA-licensed home certification organization.

Here are some of the factors a third-party certifier considers when evaluating a product applying for the WaterSense® label:

  • Water savings: provides significant water savings on a national level.
  • Performance: performs as well or better than their less efficient counterparts.
  • Efficiency differentiation: are at least 20 percent more water-efficient than standard models in that category.
  • Variety of technological options: achieves water efficiency through several technology options.

What Are the Products That Can be WaterSense®-certified?

WaterSense® certification applies to all products that involve water usage. Some of the most common products requiring the WaterSense® label include:

  1. Faucets. WaterSense® faucets use a maximum of 1.5 gallons of water per minute (GPM) or more from the standard flow of 2.2 gallons per minute without sacrificing performance.
  2. Urinals. Urinals with the WaterSense® mark use no more than 0.5 gallon of water per flush (GPF) and comply with existing standards for flushing.
  3. Showerheads. Showerheads that earned the WaterSense® label use no more than 2.5 gallons of water per minute and ensure the spray force or pressure is sufficient to provide user satisfaction.
  4. Residential toilets. WaterSense® labeled toilets use 1.28 gallons per flush, which is 20 percent less water than the current federal standard of 1.6 gallons per flush.

3 Reasons to Get WaterSense® Compliant Bathroom Faucets

Studies suggest that indoor water use is highest in the bathroom, with faucets using 27 gallons of water per day. If you aren’t using WaterSense® bathroom taps yet, you’re missing out on a myriad of benefits, including:

1.Lower Water Bills

The most obvious benefit you could get from purchasing WaterSense® bathroom faucets is lower water consumption. Switching to WaterSense® labeled models lets you save up to 700 gallons per year—equivalent to 45 showers worth of water.

2.Energy Savings

The WaterSense® mark doesn’t only guarantee water savings, but it can also help with reducing your energy bills. These savings are related to energy conserved when heating water for bathing, showering or shaving.

3.Widely Available

The best thing about WaterSense® faucets is that you can find them in-store or online. The WaterSense® label is visible on the product packaging, helping you shop for high-performance and water-efficient products easier.
